READING & LITERACY

The Wyoming Afterschool Alliance is a connector for kids and families in the Cowboy State. Are you an afterschool professional looking for ideas for a virtual program? Are you a parent or caregiver looking for something to augment home learning? WYAA will help you make connections! Learn more.

Storyline Online

WYAA Chair Craig Williams recommends Storyline Online. The SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s award-winning children’s literacy website, Storyline Online, streams videos featuring celebrated actors reading children’s books alongside creatively produced illustrations. Readers include Viola Davis, Chris Pine, Lily Tomlin, Kevin Costner, Annette Bening, James Earl Jones, Betty White and dozens more. Visit www.storylineonline.net.

Shared Distance Learning Plans

Heather Fleming with WY Lit created this Facebook group on which interested teachers may share distance learning plans for students K-12. The goal is to take some pressure off of teachers who are spending incredible amounts of energy each re-creating the education wheel. This, while they are also trying to take care of their own children, neighbors and extended family. Find it at www.facebook.com.

Sheridan Virtual Arts

Read aloud with Sheridan YMCA via Facebook! Their new page features literacy along with other art activities that kids can engage with: https://www.facebook.com/SheridanVirtualArts/. Learn more at https://www.sheridanymca.org/.

Reading Bear

Heather Fleming with WY Lit hast tips for working with a struggling reader. She says, “The best thing you can do for a struggling reader is to read to them or listen to books with them. This teaches them to love escaping into books and continues to expose them to the structure of written language, vocabulary and background knowledge at their comprehension level while they become proficient readers.” One of the tools she recommends is Reading Bear, a website that helps kids practice skill-specific word reading and develop vocabulary and background knowledge. Find it at www.readingbear.org

Wyoming State Library

Our colleague Paige Bredenkamp at the Wyoming State Library reminded us that resources are available to residents for free, including ebooks, audiobooks, emagazines, as well as research databases. Visit GoWYLD.net.

Puffy Sidewalk Paint

We’ve been seeing more sidewalk art around Wyoming. Lights On Afterschool HSCSD #1 shared a recipe that puts a twist on the classic sticks of chalk. Their puffy sidewalk paint features just a few ingredients that you may already have at home. Find it on Facebook.

#WyKidsExpress

WYAA is hosting a campaign to celebrate the creativity of Wyoming’s kids using #WYKidsExpress. Do you know kids that are expressing themselves through science experiments or sidewalk art? Share their creations using #WyKidsExpress!

Mission: The Wyoming Afterschool Alliance is a statewide network working to create the conditions for young people to reach their full potential. We are a priority fund of the Wyoming Community Foundation.
